How to Quit Cigarettes For Good

Nicotine is among the deadliest of all human addictions. Clinics and hospitals are filled with patients that arrive as a consequence of smoking. Whether it is a lung disease like emphysema, a heart attack, or even bronchitis, exposure to cigarettes usually will result in health problems. It’s never too late to quit. The conventional ways to quit smoking include the patch, a spray form you ingest like a breath spray, and chewing gum.

The patch is placed on the lower back or other body part that is out of sight. It puts enough chemicals into your system to allow you to ween yourself off the nicotine addiction. After a time, your dependency on nicotine is reduced. The gum and spray work with a similar effect. You are chewing a nicotine based gum or using a spray designed to cut your body’s dependency on the drug. After a couple of months, you should be able to quit cigarettes outright and no longer crave its effects.

There are also a couple of pharmaceuticals available which require doctor prescription to help you or a loved one end the addiction. These pharmaceuticals block the part of the brain which make a person crave nicotine and its effects. They get to the root of the problem by discontinuing the pleasure-seeking part of your brain which associates cigarettes with good feelings.

All of these plans work in their own right but you must pick a plan and still with it. Your own will power will ultimately decide the success of you attempt to quit cigarettes.

Managing Healthcare Has Evolved

The days of doctors and nurses charting every aspect of a patient’s care by hand are almost gone. There are still some handwritten notes and documents in a patient’s chart, but the majority of them are now computer-generated.  Similarly, healthcare management technology has entered offices and clinics. With the advent of healthcare information systems, these systems can handle just about anything from practice management to implementing and maintaining electronic health records.

What does this mean? The evolution of healthcare information systems, such as the two mentioned above, makes it possible for patient information to be accessed by healthcare professionals and practitioners easier and faster. The new systems allow staff to transfer information without compromising document security or patient privacy.

Technology also makes it faster to enter the information, as doctors, nurses, and even medical assistants can carry laptops with them. Some facilities have in-room computers to update treatment protocols and findings. This allows others to see what has been done and what is being done so that treatment can be coordinated, which results in better patient care.

Practice management is streamlined by the use of healthcare management programs. Everything is in one or two places, instead of spread out over a number of offices or even buildings. This makes it easier for billing and coding to be done, as well as for the transmittal of information between clinic or facility locations.

All the advances in healthcare information systems add up to one thing: higher-quality patient care that is delivered faster and more efficiently.

Stockholm Syndrome: Love Your Enemy

If you have never heard of Stockholm Syndrome, it is a mental issue which can often develop when a person is held captive by someone (and even harmed by them).  In a situation like that, the rational thing to do would be to develop hatred and resentment (if not a sort of condescending pity) for the people that did the kidnapping.  But in a lot of cases, it can actually lead to the kidnappees feeling sympathy toward their kidnappers.  In some cases, it can even lead to the kidnappees wanting to join their kidnappers, and feeling a sense of serious loyalty toward them.  While this can be dangerous, it has roots in the nature of human associations.  And it is not always used for negative purposes, either.

Stockholm Syndrome was actually named for a bank robbery which happened back in the 1970s in the city of Stockholm Sweden.  Believe it or not, it only took a period of six days for the hostages to go from being terrified of their captors, to actually becoming loyal to them and sympathetic to their “plight.”  In the aftermath, the freed hostages refused to testify against their captors.  One of the female captives even married one of the men that held them hostage.  If that is not true love… it is most definitely Stockholm Syndrome doing what it does best.

The nature of Stockholm Syndrome most likely goes back to the hunter gatherer times of our species.  Back in those days, men from one tribe would often kidnap the young women of other tribes.  Naturally, the women could eventually figure out a way to escape from their captors (since no one can watch another person all of the time).  But the ones who believed that they loved their new tribe not only had better chances of survival (in a group instead of alone).  They also had a better chance of having more, healthy children.  Those were our mutual ancestors.

Diogenes Syndrome: not Caring Anymore

Sometimes, as a person grows older and older, their mind begins to break down as senility takes hold of their mind with an increasingly firm grip.  In a case like that, it can become easy for them to turn into recluses who hoard things (with animals being a very common thing to be hoarded), and to forsake their own personal hygeine.  This personal breakdown is known as Diogenes Syndrome, and it really does not even make all that much sense.  It is actually based on an individual who did not practice and sort of hoarding, and who actually might have taken perfectly fine care of his person from a hygeinic perspective.  Nonetheless, the name has stuck, for better or worse.

In a person who has Diogenes Syndrome, it is common to collect lots of stuff.  This is essentially a person whose mind has latched onto the notion that having a lot of something (really, anything) is a way in which they can stay in this world for just that much longer than if they simply let go of everything and moved on in the “shed the mortal coil” kind of sense.  While this is not the kind of thing the real Diogenes would have done, since he was a transient guy who lived in a wine barrel, it does speak of a lot of homeless people in the modern age.

Another common trait that characterizes the Diogenes inspired person is an unfortunate tendency to no longer take care of themselves.  In many cases, this leads to teeth which are in terrible condition, to not bathing very often (or at all), and even to no longer tending to their hindquarters when they have used the restroom.  Again, the real Diogenes was most likely not a nasty individual.  But for however he actually was, it is possible that someone really did not like him- because in this day and age, he is remembered in this particular way.

Adding Behavioral Health Coverage to Your Insurance Plan

If you have a medical problem, or even if you’re healthy but know that you could get sick in the future, it’s a good idea to add behavioral health coverage to your health insurance plan. This kind of coverage addresses mental health issues, which can develop on their own or as a result of a serious physical illness. When people are sick, they can get depressed and anxious. Left unchecked, that can develop into an actual mental illness that needs treatment on its own and/or in conjunction with the physical health problems. Not everyone gets down when they get sick, but it can and does happen. Having insurance coverage to get it treated can really help you move forward with your life.

Of course, you have to weigh the odds of it happening against the cost of having the insurance. Behavioral health coverage isn’t free. Depending on your plan, it could cost you just a few dollars or it could be quite expensive. With that in mind, you’ll want to check around online to compare insurance quote A to insurance quote B in order to see what it will cost you. If it seems too expensive, maybe you should check with a few different insurance companies in order to determine if there’s a better option for you. Switching companies could save you a lot of money in the long run.

Money isn’t everything, of course, and your health is more important than cost, but you still have to be able to afford your insurance. If you can’t afford the insurance and you’re struggling to pay the premiums, you may end up getting sick from the stress. That’s not a good thing, and could lead to problems that are more serious in the future. Choosing good, affordable insurance with behavioral health coverage is the right way to go.

Paris Syndrome: Politeness Gone Bad

There are a lot of problems in the modern world.  Among those problems are the fact that the world is very rarely as nice and kind as is idealized in the movies and TV.  In real life, people can be rude (or even downright cruel) and the settings can be less neat and hygeinic than they would be in the more idealized views that someone such as a tourist might be expecting to see.  And this is precisely the type of problem which is frequently faced when Japanese tourists come to the city of Paris, France.  Paris Syndrome is a problem which actually causes a few dozen polite Japanese tourists to have a complete mental breakdown, and need to be rushed back to their home country after encountering the “hospitality” for which the French are so well known.

French people are often quite rude.  Even the wait staff at restaurants can be sassy to the point of downright unpleasantness.  And while this is not the sort of thing that one sees on TV, it is how things tend to be when you are there.  If a rude French waiter argues with someone, the people of most countries would simply flash some anger back at him and keep things basically even.  But the Japanese, who are internationally renowned for being very polite people, will often bottle up their anger.

Needless to say, this suppression of one’s feelings tends to turn into a serious problem after awhile.  While most people can simply calm themselves and move on with things, a few of them will actually develop a full mental breakdown caused by doing everything in their power to avoid “losing face” by being rude to someone.  For some people, this is simply not an acceptable thing to do, even if it does involve sacrificing their sanity in the process.  The Japanese embassy actually maintains a constant hotline, for situations in which such a thing happens to someone.

Online Shrinks

With increasing penetration of internet into our daily lives and the increasing laziness of people to get out of their houses has given birth to online therapy. Internet has revolutionized shopping, friendship, communication, education, dating, entertainment, gambling, porn, businesses and the list just keeps going on. Although not yet in big time practice, this is being looked at very closely. Particularly the use of online medicine and diagnosis is being looked at closely to put the same into practice in Psychotherapy. People when facing some king of illness or disease are first consulting online resources such as Google’s vast database and forums where people have already discussed their problems. This gives a person a good idea of the disease that she has and can feel relaxed that the cure is available. People do not usually feel comfortable going to doctors for their personal problems related to their sex or mental illness.
But is consulting an online shrink the same as seeing a shrink in person? Debates are currently going on with a few institutes carrying out controlled trials to gauge the effectiveness of this trial. A few unlicensed commercial shrinks are also providing online counseling for people. A few of the major problems associated with online therapy is that the psychologist loses the important sing of asserting a patients response to a question, that is the body language. Even if cameras are used, they can only focus on the face but not the entire body. Still optimistic psychologists argue that what tools are lost with body language are gained with a clear understanding of the patients consciousness. This is more effective when people are tying instead of taking. While typing a patient has time to think and rethink his answer to every question. But this practice needs further study and worse case scenarios need to be outlined.
